Language Arts Overview
Writing
A strong emphasis is placed on writing too. This year, we will be using units for Writing from Schoolwide. Similar to the Schoolwide reading curriculum, the writing curriculum will focus on the workshop model. Mini lessons will be taught and teacher will confer with students on their writing pieces. The writing curriculum will focus on: purpose/meaning, structure/organization, craft/style, and conventions. During each unit of study, students will move through the writing process which includes the following: immersion, generating ideas, selecting, collecting, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, and self-reflecting. Writing assignments will vary and include the following: biographies, essays, memoirs, narratives, and poetry. Language Arts/English and writing activities will be incorporated into writer’s workshop. Students will use a writing notebook.
Handwriting
Students will continue practicing their cursive writing. Some handwriting sheets will be completed in class and assigned for homework. Students should make an effort to practice their cursive. Students will be expected to write in cursive for all reading, English language arts, and spelling assignments during the third trimester.
